FAQ to  the questions you may have about Alexander Technique

Q. I’ve heard the Alexander Technique is about posture. Will it help my back pain?

A. Alexander Technique is very effective in resolving back and neck pain where posture is a factor. Posture is just another word for the shape that you end up in unconsciously, in response to the pressures in your life. With awareness, you can transform an awkward posture into balance and poise.

Q. By comparison with other ways of releasing pain, stress and unwanted tension, how is Alexander Technique distinctive?

A. Massage and exercising and in fact soaking in a good hot bath are very good for tension, however this is temporary release; the tension exists because the brain has put it there. The Technique works with the whole ‘self’ to enable you to regain your original easy movement. It gets right down to the seat of the muscle mechanism; the fundamental cause, the mind/muscle connection.

Q. Must you be in pain before learning the Alexander Technique?

A. No, the Technique can be applied at many levels; prevention is definitely better than cure. No pain: plenty of gain!

It can be very beneficial though for someone with pain e.g. joint pain or arthritis to have some lessons, as awareness is the all important key to better self management. I have worked with many folk who are surprised to find that what they are doing is causing them their problems.

Q. Is it better to learn this by individual lessons with a teacher, or can you learn it in a group?

A. Your perception changes by various means. Private lessons serve best because each human being is so unique. However, group introductory lessons can make you aware of what the technique is about so you have a better choice.

Q. At what age is it best to learn the Alexander Technique?

A. Addressing the situation in the young is the best solution. However, any age is the right age and nothing can replace enthusiasm when you want to learn, no matter what your age.

Q. How many Alexander lessons will I need?

It is completely up to you. It depends upon what you want to get from the Alexander Technique. Your decision leads the learning. No obligation. The results are long term.

Q. What should I wear?

Wearing comfortable clothing, anything you want, as long as you wear or bring pants or shorts.
