Swimming with Alexander Technique.
Alexander Technique is a well-guarded secret to reducing tension while gaining strength and resilience in swimming.
In the water, there is often misconception about water resistance damage that can be caused. While gravitational freedom is letting you feel free, the solidness of the water ‘wall’ can create resistance. The misconception is compounded when too much effort is used to gain headway through this wall while swimming.
If you find that this is too hard,
- Or you would rather give it up,
- Or you find that your time in the water is becoming painful,
- Then it is time to take a look at what you can do about it.
While you are swimming, an Alexander teacher will look very closely how you are moving in the water. Particularly at the relationship between the head, neck and back. How they relate to each other in movement. Here is a short clip of what is can be like.
This is the cornerstone of good movement.
The most subtle of changes in head, neck and back can make a big difference in your progress.
How Alexander Technique works.
- How much effort we do that’s way over what we need to in any action.
- We are often unaware of how much and how damaging our over-doing is to our system.
- Our energy zaps quicker and affects the overall result we get both in the water.
Essentially, you have to go with the flow instead of fighting the wall of resistance. As the song goes it ain’t what you do, its the way that you do it, and that’s what gets results.
Alexander Technique is a very effective way of becoming aware of your over-effort. It provides solutions you may never have thought of, to better swimming.
