“With the best of intentions, the job of acting can become a display of accumulated bad habits, trapped instincts and blocked energies. Working with the Alexander Technique to untangle the wires has given me sightings of another way; mind and body, work and life together. Real imaginative freedom.” ~Alan Rickman
Alexander Technique was developed by Tasmanian actor Frederick M Alexander because of a glitch in his voice and the stress it caused.
Acting is physically and emotionally demanding. The role often places great demand on the physicality – the way you walk, talk, stand, move, in order to convey the role. To use Alexander Technique is to tweak yourself so you surpass yourself; your presence; you have poise and buoyancy, balance and ease.
Most celebrities, actors, singers and performers know the meaning of good ‘body talk’ communicating through their use, movement, to convey their performance. Just as a musician fine tunes their instrument, so a performer fine tunes themselves to give their best through Alexander lessons.
Michael Hurst says: From the very first session with Jann I was able to focus on the physical habits of a lifetime that have caused the problem in my back, to begin to change these habits, and to attain some considerable relief as I practiced the technique. Moreover, I find that when I allow myself to think into what I am doing, walking, sitting, standing, I feel a sense both of calmness and of inner strength.
The Alexander Technique helps the actor – “become” more of yourself even though doing ‘less’!
“I recommend Jann’s teaching of Alexander Technique to actors who want to improve their sense of ease and physicality in a role”. says Jennifer Ward Lealand
